March 8: Not so super Tuesday
In which, America gets the rematch nobody wanted, Biden gives the State of Somebody’s Union, and my that less than stellar econ data is like a bad penny - always turning up.
Not so super Tuesday
Watching the results of all the primary elections this last Tuesday was like hearing the announcement of yet another phase in the MCU:
I guess the dedicated fan base is getting what they wanted, but a lot of us would like to move on. Still, we’ve got (in all likelihood) Trump vs. Biden, the Sequel coming to a ballot box near you this November with both candidates claiming big wins on Tuesday.
Trump got even more than just the election wins, but also scooped up a key endorsement from outgoing Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, and a “yuge” 9-0 Supreme Court win that largely ended efforts to keep Trump off the ballot.
For Biden, the primary wins were more or less assured, but like Trump, Biden still managed to lose one primary, this one to some dude named Jason in American Samoa. The progressive, anti-Israel wing of the Democratic Party also continues to make things interesting with its “uncommitted” vote campaign.
So now, we have both parties moving into general election mode well before the party conventions and I know we’re all thinking the same thing: We just added an extra day (February 29) to the calendar and an extra hour of daylight (Daylight Savings starts this Sunday) to extend the already overlong campaign season.
I love studying and reading about politics, but I am certainly not looking forward to where this campaign could go in its level of nastiness. I’m not one of those doomsdayers who thinks this ends in fire and sword, but Biden and Trump, legitimately chosen candidates that they are, don’t represent what’s best about America. Thankfully, I also don’t believe that the President is the end all be all in American politics and government. God bless federalism.
